Abortion: A Grave Sin and a Crime Equivalent to Murder

According to Swami Ramsukhdas Ji, abortion is considered a heinous sin, equivalent to the crime of murder. It is not merely a social or moral issue but also a grave act of religious and spiritual misconduct. In contemporary society, people often fall prey to misconceptions, believing that a fetus during the first three to four months of pregnancy is merely a piece of flesh with no life. However, this belief is misguided and propagated by false narratives.

The Beginning of Life with Conception

Both science and religious scriptures affirm that life begins at the moment of conception. As soon as the male sperm and female egg unite, a new life is formed. At that very instant, the child's personality, intellectual capacity, blood group, height, and other characteristics are determined. The nine months spent in the mother's womb are a phase of growth and development, not the beginning of life.

Fetal Development from a Scientific Perspective

According to science, fetal development follows these stages:

  1. First Week: Cell division begins, and a new life establishes its presence in the mother’s womb.

  2. Second Week: The embryo starts receiving nourishment from the mother's food. Fingernails begin to form.

  3. Third Week: The brain, spinal cord, lungs, liver, intestines, and kidneys start forming.

  4. Eighteenth Day: The embryo's heart starts beating.

  5. Fourth Week: The head and spine begin to develop fully.

  6. Fifth Week: Different body parts, including eyes, ears, hands, and legs, become visible.

  7. Sixth to Seventh Week: Brain waves can be detected, and the embryo starts making movements.

  8. Eighth Week: The baby can feel touch and pain, suck its thumb, and perform movements.

  9. Beyond: The baby’s heartbeat can be heard using an ultrasonic stethoscope, and its fingerprints, which remain unique for a lifetime, are formed.

The Ability to Learn in the Womb

The story of Abhimanyu in the Mahabharata and numerous scientific studies suggest that a fetus can learn and acquire knowledge from its mother. Recognizing this, the Odisha government has implemented a program to educate unborn children. By the fourth or fifth month, the fetus’s brain becomes capable of processing the mother’s signals. It is scientifically proven that the thoughts and emotions of a mother influence her unborn child. For instance, if a pregnant woman drives frequently, the baby may unknowingly develop an understanding of vehicle operation.

Abortion: An Inhumane Act

Abortion is equivalent to the murder of a living being. Just as it is unimaginable for someone to kill a one-month-old infant, terminating a fetus in the womb is no less horrifying. It is an inhumane act to end the life of an innocent child who is unable to protect itself.

Religious Condemnation of Abortion

Ancient scriptures like Manusmriti and Parashara Smriti explicitly state that abortion is an even greater sin than Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahmin). They go as far as declaring that even the sight of food prepared by someone who has committed abortion renders the food impure and inedible. This highlights the profound condemnation of abortion in religious texts.

Abortion: Deception in the Age of Kaliyuga

In today’s world, abortion is often portrayed as a routine medical procedure. However, it is essentially an act of murder disguised as "cleaning" or "removal." If killing a person outside the womb is a punishable offense, how can the termination of a developing human inside the womb be legally justified? This contradiction reflects the distorted sense of morality in the present era.

Conclusion

According to Swami Ramsukhdas Ji, abortion is a heinous crime against humanity and a grave sin. It is the unjust killing of an innocent soul who has been given the opportunity to enter this world by the divine will of God. Therefore, one must refrain from abortion and encourage others to do the same. Life is a divine gift, and it is our duty to protect and cherish it, not destroy it through such a grave act.
