What is Diabetes? Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes has become a common disease in today’s fast-paced life. Due to an unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet, stress, and lack of physical activity, it is spreading rapidly. Earlier, this problem was mostly seen in older people, but now even young individuals and children are affected. It is a condition that gradually weakens the body and, once it occurs, lasts a lifetime.

Why Does Diabetes Occur?

Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body cannot use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps convert glucose (sugar) from food into energy. A lack of insulin leads to an increased sugar level in the blood, resulting in diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

1. Type-1 Diabetes

  • The body does not produce insulin at all.

  • It usually occurs in childhood or adolescence.

  • It is controlled through insulin injections.

2. Type-2 Diabetes

  • The body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it properly.

  • It is mostly caused by an unhealthy diet and poor lifestyle.

  • It can be managed with diet, exercise, and medications.

Symptoms of Diabetes

  1. Constant Fatigue – Even after getting enough sleep, the body feels tired and lacks energy.

  2. Frequent Urination – Excess sugar in the body is expelled through urine, leading to frequent urination.

  3. Increased Thirst – Due to excessive urination, the body loses water, causing frequent thirst.

  4. Blurry Vision – Diabetes affects eyesight, making objects appear blurry.

  5. Sudden Weight Loss – Unexplained rapid weight loss can be a sign of diabetes.

  6. Increased Hunger – The body does not get enough energy, leading to frequent hunger.

  7. Slow Healing of Wounds – Poor blood circulation causes even minor wounds to heal slowly.

  8. Frequent Infections – Diabetic patients have a weak immune system, making them prone to infections.

  9. Skin Problems – Itching, infections, and dryness of the skin become more common.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Diabetes

1. Herbal Remedies

  • Fenugreek (Methi) – Soak 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds overnight and drink the water on an empty stomach.

  • Giloy – Drinking Giloy juice helps control blood sugar levels.

  • Jamun (Indian Blackberry) – Consume Jamun seed powder every morning on an empty stomach.

  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry) – Take 2 teaspoons of Amla juice with lukewarm water.

Precautions for Diabetes

1. Regular Blood Sugar Monitoring

  • Check your blood sugar levels regularly.

  • Use a glucometer as per your doctor’s advice.

2. Follow a Healthy Diet

  • Consume fiber, protein, and healthy fats.

  • Avoid sugary and fried foods.

3. Exercise Regularly

  • Walk, do yoga, or perform light exercise for 30-40 minutes daily.

  • Exercise increases insulin sensitivity.

4. Get Enough Sleep and Reduce Stress

  • Get 7-8 hours of quality sleep daily.

  • Stress increases cortisol levels, which can disrupt blood sugar levels.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

  • Drink 2-3 liters of water daily to flush out toxins.

6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

  • Smoking and alcohol increase blood sugar levels and negatively affect the heart and kidneys.
