Dowry System: A Social Curse | Say No to Dowry, Say Yes to Dignity

Dowry System is a Curse

The dowry system is no longer a custom, it has now become a curse. Whenever a girl is born, the very first thought that strikes the minds of many is – “One day she will go to someone else’s house, and we will have to give dowry with her.”Yet, even after giving dowry, a woman does not get the respect she deserves. This pain can best be understood by a woman herself.

As soon as marriage discussions start in a family with a daughter, the very first topic becomes the budget of the wedding. The boy’s family usually has only one thought – “How much can the girl’s family spend on the marriage?”

Nowadays, boy’s families take pride in demanding big cars and heavy dowries. They behave as if dowry is their birthright. Many times, parents are forced to go beyond their means just to keep their daughter happy by giving dowry. This has now become a very serious issue.

Dowry has turned into a social evil. It is believed that in earlier times, parents would gift their daughter some items during marriage as a token of love and memory. But today, these gifts have turned into a mockery.

In the past, marriages were simple and affordable. Relationships were based on mutual love between families. But in today’s world, the birth of a daughter is often seen as a burden. From the day she is born, her parents start cutting down on their own needs to save money for her wedding. Elders keep reminding them – “Spend wisely, you have a daughter. Tomorrow you will need money for her marriage.”

Today, parents educate their daughters, but education seems to hold no value in front of the demon of dowry. Often, dowry even claims the lives of innocent girls. Relationships nowadays are based not on the qualities of the girl, but on how much her father can afford to give.

If a girl’s father can fulfill the demands, the marriage takes place; otherwise, it is rejected. Society foolishly believes that if a car is received in dowry, their social status will increase. Families are forming bonds with cars and money, not with daughters. No one values the fact that the parents have given their heart’s treasure – their daughter – who will serve the new family selflessly. So why demand dowry?

Dowry is a Curse

I believe that together we must take a strong step against dowry, otherwise this evil will keep growing. Those who truly understand this pain are the parents of daughters and those who have sisters at home. If educated youth come forward, this demon can be destroyed forever.

Educated society needs to lead the way. Some people are now beginning to realize that taking dowry is indeed a great sin.

If today’s youth raise their voice and even oppose their parents for demanding or giving dowry, this evil can truly end. Then no daughter will be sacrificed for dowry, and no unborn girl will be killed in the womb out of fear of dowry.

Some parents, unable to afford weddings, even take loans. Many are unable to repay them and lose their lives under the burden of debt. Society seems to believe that the father of a girl is born only to give dowry. And this dirty game doesn’t end with the wedding day – it continues lifelong. On festivals like Diwali or Holi, the girl’s family is constantly exploited, always expected to send gifts.

Girls often face taunts in their marital homes like – “What did your father give you?” or “Even the food your father arranged was not good enough.” People forget that if they exploit someone else’s daughter today, tomorrow their own daughter might suffer the same pain.

Because of dowry, countless girls have lost their lives. This is a matter of deep shame for our society.

End the Dowry System

History proves that no evil ends without a movement. And to succeed, youth must lead such a movement. Statistics show that around 70% of India’s population is young men. If they pledge to end dowry, this demon can be eradicated from our society forever.

We must unite to destroy this social evil. Just as the nation fights dirt and corruption, dowry too must be wiped out. Only thinking about it will not help – we need an organized movement. In today’s digital age, if youth use the internet to start a campaign against dowry, strict action can be taken against those who demand and those who tempt with dowry.

Some rich people spoil society by offering huge dowries voluntarily to marry their daughters into “big families.” Even they should be held accountable. On the other hand, poor families are crushed under debts for weddings.

If we all decide, this evil can surely be uprooted. Let us take a new pledge today –

Conclusion

The dowry system is not just an old custom – it has become a deep wound in our society. It destroys families, takes innocent lives, and reduces the dignity of women to mere money and gifts. If we truly want a progressive and equal society, we must end this social disease from its roots.

The responsibility lies on today’s youth, the educated generation, to raise their voice, oppose dowry in every form, and refuse to be part of this evil. A daughter is not a burden; she is the pride of her family and the strength of society.

Let us take a pledge that we will neither demand dowry, nor give dowry, and will encourage others to do the same. Only then can we build a society where marriages are based on love, respect, and equality – not on wealth or greed.
